I tried that with Linux and it was hit and miss. Less than 1/2 the machines worked so let's just write it may or may not work.

I don't want to make the 'win xp on a sd card'. Only use it on the same
computer. Making it portable for other computers would also be against microsoft licences.
About linux ubunte a utube video says, that installed on a usb/sd card
device, it would in fact be portable, and run on most computers connected to?

It ran on less than half the machines at the office.
You can do the same tests and gather more results.
As to XP on a SD CARD you face double trouble. Not only the issue you encounter with Linux which supports running from removable media but the fact that the XP installer and the OS doesn't support this. I'm sure there is some article about running XP from an USB memory stick but I know it's unsupportable and unreliable so my view is that if you want to try, go right ahead.

About ubuntu 10.04:
I installed the OS on a usb memory stick.
And tried to boot it on 3 computers:
1 newer amd desktop: Booted and ran.
1 newer intel laptop: Booted and ran.
1 not so new amd desktop: Apparently it didn't support usb boot, and
wouldn't run. After making a boot manager cd with an iso from http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagerdl.html it booted ubuntu and ran.
So ubuntu should be quite portable.
