active desktop recovery

mycomputer is a gateway DX 300s, using windows xp. my active desktop has went into safe mode because of a problem i had before how do i fix the problem, it say's that " ms windows has experienced an unexpected error, as a precaution, your active desktop has been turned off. to restore the active desktop use the following troubleshooting tips. i did all the troubleshooting tips, but still can not get the active desktop to return. i would also like to know how do i reload my operating system (win xp)

Follow the instructions in the link below using an XP cd:

As to the Active Desktop, have you tried this?

Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Desktop tab click the Customize Desktop button, under the Web tab uncheck everything including My Current Homepage, click OK/Apply/OK.

If that doesn't get it done, try the suggestions in this thread.
