What you mentioned as a revert back image is fine. But you need to be on SP3 to have Windows Security Essentials as a virus cleaner. You can get it only if you are able to get all the Updates from the MS site. The problem that we have when using an Athlon CPU is that it is not recognized by these two updates, SP2 and SP3, they freeze any Athlon machine. It is not very nice of MS to not do anything about these two updates as all Athlon users will be left in a lurch after July 13th.
I have three Athlon machines running, none is OEM. All three are homebrewed and are fine machines. I had been trying to install these two updates for the last three years. At the moment, I am really insisting with MS and a fine techie seems to be answering my pleases. He is sending me a free CD of XPP with a streamed SP3 to load from it and see if it will then run fine and have access to IE 8 and mainly Security Essentials. I will know in a week or so and will be back here to tell either joy or sadness. I would then again pursue MS to at least have them recognize that there is a "coding" problem in their updates, not the users' problem.
I have tried lately, at least 20 times to get these to install. As you do, I have an image of one of my machines running SP1, and if again the updates crunge it, I can get back to SP1 in 7 minutes and try another method. I use Acronis clone. I promise to get back with any result.
XPP is for sale on eBay for $50.00, and it has SP3 included.
Fun it is. JP.
