Samsung SH-S222A DVD RW drive won't read DVDs

I've been helping a friend clean up his Windows XP PC and I've run into a problem I've never seen before.

We purchased a Samsung SH-S222A DVD RW drive and it "seemed" to install without problem on the PC. Windows XP doesn't identify the drive as having any problems in the Device Manager and, when we put data disks in the drive, autorun usually works.

However, we haven't been able to get the drive to recognize DVDs nor to play sound. This drive explicitly states that the analog audio port has been disable. But, that shouldn't be an issue since we'd use digital sound in any case.

Can anyone help me to understand what's going on? My friend would like to play movies on the PC but can't in the current state.

In its stock form XP does not play movie DVDs. Your post didn't reveal what software you used to add this feature to XP but for now, try this -> VLC PLAYER at http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html

I used VLC. And, before that, I'd downloaded CODECs (whose names I can't remember) thinking that that was the issue.

Still no DVD play. I'm stumped; I've never seen this behavior before.

Are you suggesting that I should be able to get DVDs to play simply by installing VLC?

Simply installing VLC only adds VLC. Some want the DVD to autoplay or more. Autoplay is finicky in XP with tools out there like autofix and more.

If all is as it should be I could on most machines run VLC PLAYER and open the dvd for play in VLC PLAYER but I find most users to not want to do that. You'll have to explore autoplay repair for most users.

I'll do a little additional research and see what happens. Honestly, this PC is only about three years old, and I'm about to suggest that the owner simply dump XP and convert to Windows 7 to avoid these kinds of hassles. This user would have huge problems with any of the current distros of Linux, so my options are pretty limited.

As a general comment, it boggles me that people won't just trash XP and go with a modern operating system, but some are fixated on the past I guess.
