Help! Mouse click problem

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop system with Windows XP sp3. Everything is running fine. I have a Microsoft 5 button optical mouse that is working fine except that when I click, it registers multiple times within windows. So if I go to file --> new tab in a browser, three tabs show up. If I try to click text to high light it, it takes me three tries to get what I want highlighted because I click, it hightlights everything, then I click again and nothing is highlighted... is there anything that can be done? I've only noticed this recently. The mouse is only a few years old.
