Blue screen at startup - then it restarts

Hi everybody,
This is a horrible one. I am getting a blue screen at the start-up, but it does not stay for long enough to see the message, then the computer just restarts. Its the same for safe more. I've tried the recovery tool, but as I can remember the admin password I cant get it to work.

I have some things on this computer that I still need, so doing a reinstall is something I want to avoid.

If I install a second copy of XP, can I edit the registry files of the original install?

Or can anybody give me some other advice?
