Recovering a Deleted XP User Account

Hi, everyone:

I accidentally deleted on of my key user accounts and thought it would be easy to get it back using System Restore in Windows XP [location: Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools. I'm running XP Pro V5.1 SP3 on an HP NC6000 laptop. Anyway, I kept getting the error "Your computer cannot be restored..." which caused me to begin to panic. Nothing I tried seemed to work. As a last attempt, I turned off my anti-virus and firewall (Norton 360 V1.3.3.5) and booted the PC into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during the boot. I ran System Restore and it worked perfectly. The user account came back and everything seems OK. I just wanted to post this in case anyone else ever has a similar problem. I'm not sure whether it was turning off Norton or booting into Safe Mode that fixed it, but I'm sure glad one of them did!

If you did then the files would be at risk.

Instead read this article BEFORE DOING ANYTHING -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

No, you don't have a corrupt profile but this article DETAILS WHAT TO DO and WHERE those files can be found.

As to System Restore, Norton does break that.

I already did use System Restore. The lost user came back. I can log on as that user and I can see all my files and icons, etc. Can you elaborate on why I shouldn't have done this? You've got me worried...

Hopefully, I'll remember this issue if it ever happens again. Will note the same in my log. I keep a log of hardware and software issues I have on my laptop. Comes from my old days as a documentation writer. Thanks, again. happy
