Windows XP forum: USB card reader not working with XP x64

Sorry about the cross post. But I did not get any responses at dslreports. I have another card reader (for smart cards not sd cards) and it works. I also have a memory stick that works. The puzzling part is that it works for 32-bit but not 64-bit. I looked at the USB drivers and the 32 driver is 5.1.2600.0 7/1/2001. The 64 bit driver is 5.2.3790.1830 10/1/2002.

I have tried it in all the the available ports and it does not work in any of them. However when I plugged it into an low speed external usb hub I got a warning that the device can perform faster if it was connected to a high speed (2.0) port. This is an SD card reader. I do not have any other SD readers. All of the other USB devices work with the 64 bit OS. The perplexing part is that it work on the 32 bit OS and the 64 bit OS does see it but just does not assign a drive to it. I experimented with adding usb devices in different orders to see if the card reader was reserving a drive letter. I found that my memory stick would be assigned the same drive letter regardless as to if the card read had been plugged in before the memory stick. So again the OS sees the card reader but does not assign it a drive letter.

It's not supported so readers and larger memory cards will fail.

I have not heard of any company stepping up to address this.
