Virus stops OS from working, please help!

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem.

I came upon a virus last night that froze my Firefox browser for a minute or so. I then get a message from Norton that it had blocked that specific virus from probing the system. However, within two minutes the entire system froze. I pulled out the battery of my laptop and rebooted.

Once of the laptop was back on, Norton had entirely dissapeared, and had been replaced with shoddy Antivirus software that kept telling me my computer was under constant threat. I tried opening Norton to no luck.

I rebooted again. Now I'm stuck in a position where every time I restart the system, the background basically idles indefinitely. I cannot open the Control Panel, nor any folders or programs from the start menu. I cannot reformat even if I tried.

Any help would be greatly appriciated. The notebook is a Sony Vaio FS640W/S running XP SP3.
