Folder looks empty - but it's not!

Here is the deal: I've got a folder on my computer with ALL the pictures I've taken with my digital camera. It's on C:\Rafael\Multimdia\Fotos\Minha cmera\2004. On Tuesday I took same photos and went downloading them to my computer. When the downloading got finished, I opened the folder "2004" and it looked EMPTY. 0 object(s), 0 bytes. There was supposed to be A LOT of subfolders full of pictures. I used the search function on Windows and found shortcuts on C:\Documents and Settings\Rafael\Recent to some (SOME!) of the subfolders. When I click on the shortcuts, the pictures in the subfolders are normally exhibited. But when I click on the "up" button (sorry, I don't if it's called "up" on Windows in English) to see the "2004" folder, it still looks empty.
At first, when all the pictures disappeared, I thought my computer was hacked or something. But now I just presume it's just another really, REALLY annoying Windows XP bug.
Have this ever happened to anyone here? I have no idea of what to do. Help needed.
Thanks a lot!
