I will trust any module included in a Microsoft package when they pry ZoneAlarm Pro from my cold, dead fingers.

Any personal firewall is better then Service Pack 2 XP. If one would like to test this, do the following:
After installing the XP firewall go to the following:
Gibson Research Corporation
http://www.grc.com/
This company is run by a man that has been a round since the micro computers have been around. His name is Steve Gibson, he a owns "SpinRite" a data recovery application (since micros have been a round).
At that site will be found a test for testing the ports on your computer for safety. It will also generate a report for you as well.
It is a free test.
This then would tell a person which firewall app to use.

The firewall in XP is like most things Microsoft - barely adequate. It only works against incoming intrusions. If someone is able to get a Trojan, keylogger, or some other bug into your system, the XP firewall does NOTHING to stop out-going data. It doesn't even warn you. At least with ZoneAlarm (I'm using the free version), it will alert you to most, if not all programs that try to access the Internet. I'm using a 6 year old 400 mHz P2 with Win 98 and have never had a problem. I just make sure that my A-V (Norton) and ZoneAlarm are kept up-to-date, checking the A-V weekly and Zone monthly.

I would recommend using ZoneAlarm. The Windows XP firewall does not address the problem of outgoing mail. This means that yoiur computer could be used by an undiscovered worm or trojan.

SP2 Firewall cannot cloak your presence on the web. SP2 Firewall cannot 'learn' how you use your ISP & websites.
ZoneAlarm Pro does all these things & more!
ZoneAlarm is far more programmable, far more secure, & is an all in all better product. Its nice of M$ to have done this for its customers, but its not their bread & butter... it is for Zone Labs.
Do yourself a big favor. make sure that ZoneAlarm Pro firewall settings are both on high, & program control is set to learning mode. It should be running with the stealth modes on. Then turn OFF the SP2 Windows Firewall. SP2 firewall should at this point acknowledge your Z.A. Pro is running. SP2 has no outgoing protection, & ZoneAlarm is much more alertive. After about 30 days, move the program control from 'learning mode' to 'Medium'. I won't run any other firewall!
In my opinion, ZONEALARM PRO ROCKS!

Zone alarm is a firewall maker that is dedicated to just that, firewalls. Microsoft is not, and just started getting into the business. I recommend Zone Alarm As I use, anyday.

In my opinion, Zonealarm Pro is definitly better than the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall.
Although this firewall is very convienient and serves as great protection, it is not as specific when it comes to Program Control.
I have discovered that ZoneAlarm's easy to use interface and specific controls are alot more effective to protect against spyware, hackers, and viruses, as you have total control of which programs have access to the internet.
Windows XP SP2 Firewall also has program control, but unlike Zone Alarm Pro, it does not have information bubbles letting you decide whether or not to give access to an unknown program when it is attempting to access the internet.
The fact is, Windows XP Sevice Pack 2 Firewall is good, but Zone Alarm Pro is way better.
I hope I helped someone to make the right decision.
Thank-You

Zone Alarm, hands down! ZA works in concert with Norton AV. If I miss an AV update, ZA tells me. The folks at Zone Alarm have made their FW very customizeable. I rarely use IE and have not even patched to SP2. So far (months) I have had no intruders.

Go to the Symantec Automated Support and run it. They have some papers listing what must be done to have complete compatibility between NAV and ZA. The Automated Support will list any problems it finds that you may not even know that you have.

I used the SP2 Firewall for a period of time and had no problems. It flagged me a few times when a program was trying to access the Internet or a port and asked me if I wanted to block it. Therefore, it must check both inputs and outputs.
If you try to use two or more Firewalls the SP2 Security Center flags this and recommends turning one off.
Microsoft is an enormous company with enormous resources and I am sure they have a dedicated software group to write the Firewall code. The only problem I have with MSs Firewall is that they do not update the data base very often. ZA, on the other hand, is constantly updating their definitions to block new threats.

Zonealarm I find to be the best for firewall protection. All ports are in stealth mode so why should I bother? I feel very secure with ZA. No problems.Theres an old saying... if its not broke, don't fix it. XP with SP1 is working just fine.

I agree with Radman. I have not had any problems with my Zonealarm except for it trying to give me too much protection. I upgraded to Pro. had used the other for years do not run a virus protection program because zonealarm works.. the virus protection take up to much running time. and I have had only one Virus in 6 years. so I think zonealarm is the answer. I have XP-SP2 installed and disabled windows Firewall..

Windows XP pre-SP2 came with a built-in firewall. It was a bad excuse for a bad joke. Its only saving grace? It was better than nothing.
Windows XP SP2 came with a revamped firewall. It is now just a joke, as opposed to being an excuse for a joke. Still, MS should be embarrassed for taking so long to come up with such a weak product.
Stick with ZoneAlarm or just about any other 3rd party Internet security product. TrendMicro, McAfee and Norton all offer some sort of personal firewall with their latest antivirus offerings. Any one of them easily outperforms the built-in Windows firewall.

It is best to use Zonelabs technology, which includes any of the ZoneAlarm(I've used in the past; they are very good) line and Computer Associates firewall in eTrust EZ Armor (which I use now). The native XP firewall does not filter outgoing internet calls. If you have broadband, then I suggest that you also use a router with stateful packet inspection firewall. Two layers of firewall will increase your security; ZoneLabs technology is a good layer. ZoneAlarm is a firewall that learns. It filters ident, 113, something that many routers don't do.

Do Not turn your Zone Alarm off.
I use both, and have my ZA configured to let me know when any program try to access the internet or starts to operate.
SP2 fire wall dont do that.
SP2 even reccomends that U use BOTH firewalls.
Err...iwish...where does SP2 recommend using both?

In the Microsoft Help and Support Center for SP2:
"Off: This setting turns Windows Firewall off. When you choose this setting, your computer is much more vulnerable to harm from unknown intruders or viruses from the Internet. This setting should only be used by
advanced users for computer administration purposes, or if your computer is protected by another firewall."
"In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Firewall is turned on by default. (However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators
might turn it off.) You do not have to use Windows Firewall-you can install and run any firewall that you choose. Evaluate the features of other firewalls and then decide which firewall best meets your needs. If you choose to install and run another firewall, turn off Windows Firewall."

How to configure the Windows Firewall feature in Windows XP Service Pack 2
It states:

Firewall..."

Under, "Tweak the Firewall" for SP2 one of his paragraphs echoes the MSKB
and the MS Help & Support Center:
"Once you've installed a bidirectional firewall, I recommend disabling the Windows Firewall altogether. Occasionally, firewalls obstruct an application
you're trying to use over a network connection--and there's nothing more frustrating than spending a half hour tweaking, disabling, and even uninstalling a firewall, only to discover that the other firewall was the culprit. To disable the Windows Firewall in the Security Center, click the Windows Firewall link at the bottom of the dialog box, check Off (not recommended) in the next window, and click OK."

Oh, puhleeze! The question has only one simple answer!
Zone Alarm, hands down. I have not, will not, patch to SP2. My computer is on 24/7. I have not had a major intrustion. Actually, the question of SP2 or ZA is rather silly. To all of you. Quit listening to all the ridiculous rumors, etc. Spend some of your own time on line reading reviews, learning, and thinking it out on your own intelligence. Far, far, far too much BS out there. Beware the Gates bashers. Their agenda is not to help you, it's to Bash Bill.

A firewall's primary function should be to block data going out. Blocking data coming in is the equally important secondary function. Since Windows XP SP2 firewall can only do one, and Zone Alarm can do both, there really should be no doubt as to which is the 'better' one.

dont use windows firewall as it really doesn't stop programs on outgoing, i use zone alarm but the free one and is great for incoming and outgoing, i guess as a pro user you have all extra function too.
use your zone alarm ..go onto the zone alarm site it doesn't say much for win/firewall nothing good anyway.

I tried many different firewalls, and the SP2 seems to be quite good. Many people use a router and that is even better yet. I do have McAfee Security package. So then, I even have another firewall. That's 3 firewalls and how can you get better protection than that?

You are supposed to use only one firewall. There may be conflicts if more then one are used, so that however good they are, they will not do the job properly, what with one 'competing' against one another.
BTW, which one do you find easiest to use and which gives you 'control' ? I find Zone Alarm good because it actually ask you whether you want access or not, and gives you the option to have the program 'remember' your choice. With Windows firewall, you can only give it 'exceptions' to what not to access.
