Sony Vaio sound card problem

I have a Sony Vaio model GC-RA716G with XP Media sp3 on it. My sound card seems to lock up periodically and stop all together or sometimes it plays fine and then it sounds like an old 45rpm record that is stuck or skipping. Rebooting the PC helps or sometimes just waiting for a while seems to help but in the meanwhile it is driving me crazy.

I use ITunes to play most of my music but also have the standard Windows Media Player and RealPlayer as well. I suspect a conflict somewhere but can't figure it out. Any suggestions.

I realize this is an old post, but I'm having the exact same problem, and it's driving me crazy too!! If you fixed it, please tell me how!

I usually answer such questions but when the part number is off I can't EASILY find out the details of the machine in question.

This may be a http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=VGCRA716G (notice the missing V?) but I can't tell.

I do see drivers but no one has written that they tried the restore media or drivers.
