Windows XP forum: Poll: Will you skip Vista entirely and wait until Windows 7?

XP could have been one of the best OS on the market but for some scam reason it will not. The reason? People are hungry of new gadget, anything that will catch their eyes and that's it. There is the real problem. If people after or before getting this Vista would at let Microsoft prove it rank on its flap to the people, maybe it would had die right in Mr. Bill Gates - no offense here, he's the one who sign my MCP certification - but out of this honorable thing it's a dishonor to had put something as bad and twisted as Vista. I say it again, if people would stick to their conviction and tell Mr. Gates to go back to its bakery and make a better cookie maybe we the people would had ate it smoothly. But it was not the case, and today are fed-up of all the scam going around money instead of well done technology. I say BOOOH to Mr. Gates and its monstrous software and or OS and other things. I say Go back to your bakery and start from scratch your cookie.

Microsoft from the esteemed Mr Gates down through the ranks in the Windows Team have already confirmed that Win7 will be an improvement and upgrade to the Vista core technology. Translated: you'll get IE8+, WMP 12+, a trashing of the useless UAC, et al.

Anyway, on point, Lee, I see no purpose in skipping Vista in order to wait for the RTM Win7 (which IMHO we won't see til late 2011 / early 2012 FWIW) - all you'd be waiting for is an upgrade to Vista. XP is gone forever, whether we like it or not.

I believe that a core technology drive in Win7 will be a wholesale shift to 64-bit computing - one of Gates' dernier cris while CTO at the firm.

And when the time comes to upgrade to Win7, who do we forecast will be allowed and able to upgrade for free with no addn hardware requirements? Vista PREMIUM / BUSINESS / ULTIMATE users? Or XP PRO / HOME users?

We've all got to bear down here and accept that this convo has little to do with software and lots to do with Redmond's desire to see us upgrade hardware - even more significantly than Vista required. The reasons for the latter are clear to industry insiders at this point and I'm sure C|NET will keep us posted on the story behind this fascinating story.

It would not be so bad if those.....male canine reproductive organs at MS would have built vista to be capable of running programs written for the XP & 2K OS's. That "Compatibility Mode" is a obscene joke, unless I am doing it completely wrong, as I have had NO success in making it work even in XP for programs written for 2K & earlier. If anyone out there can explain how to make it work I would be exceedingly grateful. And astonished.

What's holding me back from going to Vista? Well, the main reason is that (from what I've read and understand) Vista uses up more computer resources (is bloated). XP works perfectly for me, so why change now? I am hoping that Windows 7 will be something worth upgrading to.

Having used Vista since it first came out and the problems I have experienced with it and still experiencing with it I would not move onto Window 7 until all the bugs in it are ironed out. I don't think microsoft should put out a new operating system until it fixes Vista problems first!!!!

I even upgraded a machine that was on the edge and it has been working perfectly.

For a few reason. XP does what I need. XP plays the games I want except for Halo2. The OS now costs too much, so I guess you could say that Windows is pricing themselves out of the market. And due to the costs of Windows, it is entirely possible that my next machine will be a Linux OS. I have been following Linux closely and feel that it is almost ready for me. I have been using Open Office for years now since Microsoft Office priced themself out of the ballpark.

Will I upgrade or move to Windows 7? Price will tell....

Sooner or later you will want to explore more the inside of Vista than probably from there you will see what other really see into it. But I have nothing against your will. As long as your happy with what you got and doing with it.

Our new Dell laptop came with Vista SP1, and it is somewhat clumsy at times, mostly because they changed the names of some folders, such as those in "Control Panel", so it can be hard to locate what used to be easy to find. Our 4GB ram runs Vista just fine - I've noticed no "bogging down" that others complain of. I find the included photo processing software, Windows Picture Gallery, quite clumsy and am put off by that. They tried obviously to make things "easier", but only succeeded in confusing things; it may in fact be easier after hours of tutoring, but who has the time to relearn ways of filing photos - XP's "My Pictures" is adequate.

Biggest gripe I have, though, is that my favorite game for relaxing times, can't be played on the laptop. For whatever reason, Vista has things in it that befoul even popular Microsoft games such as Flight Simulators that XP runs fine. Bummer.

I have had many friends and colleagues who went out and bought Vista, And have been hating life ever since! First they had to buy all new PC hardware because their machines were not strong enough to run it, or the video cards were not supported. Then they found that once they got the hundreds of initial bugs with the OS fixed, (Kind of) almost none of their peripherals worked any longer and either couldn't get support or just gave up after multiple failed attempts. More money on new peripherals. Then many of their programs broke. More money and wated time. Then the seurity issues. Some went back to XP. Some went to MACs. The rest are still fighting with Vista. Not me Jack! I will wait to see what this Windows 7 is all about. However, I already know it will be late and will probably not be much more than a Vista re-do in the end.

I think MicroFlop should be ashamed of what they have done. I feel like I just can't trust them any more. And I am not a huge Apple fan either; They are not much better in terms of predatory buiness practices, though I do like the OS. Personally, I'm hoping that some day the open source guys will get it together and create a Linux-based desktop solution that I can get behind. I think they are getting closer, too. So for now, I will stick with XP.

I was a Windows user from Windows 95 through XP. I got Windows Vista Beta from Microsoft and decided this was junk. I dropped out of Windows and went to Apple and Mac. I am so glad I switched. I still have a laptop with XP and won't switch to Vista or Windows 7.

I have had XP for years now as do most people. When my Husband ticked me off I bought him for Christmas last year his own darn computer and it came with Vista. I told him to figure it out himself, as he is not as literate or computer oriented as I am. My trips to the computer room went down from 5-8 trips a night to help him solve one thing or another, to maybe 2 a week. I could actually stay in the kitchen and cook dinner in a reasonable amount of time without the many interuptions. I rarely have to even go in there now. I am so happy with his Vista and my Xp. I have sat there trying to figure out where stuff is, and names have changed for placing files and simple stuff that is time consuming. Now he has it figured out enough so I can do my own thing..... Whoopie...

Is this possible or does someone have another idea about using two external hard drives for 2 os on same system?
Rec. my 750GB hard drive today and have ordered Win XP which should be here very soon.
Just not savvy enough to do any of this without written instructions!

Now listen. First make sure that all the hardware is compatible for both. Beleive me it does. So when its doen, make sure you have at least and I mean It, 4GB of RAM and more if you can. Processor is fine. I hope your not talking about a laptop, cause you will never get good result with external drive. If you have a desktop than buy one large enough to hold both OS, no need to put it on 2 different drive it will do just the same. The second hard drive take the largest and fastest one if possible, so all the program and data will fit well enough. Install windows first. Make sure you don't use FAT as the format of the disk but NTFS. Finish all the installation of XP with all its driver. To make sure go click on start, then Control Panel, find the icon named System, open it, go to hardware tab an click it then into Device Manager. You'll see all the hardware that hold your computer and all that are in yellow or red means the driver is wrong so use the driver that came with you hardware or find it on the internet or ask you vendor. If they sell the product they have to have the driver for it. when all the hardware driver are ok, then, both with your vista disk and install it. Windows will know what to do if you install it in a different directory, that you'll called Vista. From this moment the new OS Vista will be a dual booth on your coputer. Make sure all the correect driver are again all without error. You will see will doing the installation that when the computer reboot you'll have two possibilities XP or Vista. Now this is very important. On the second drive make sure that you put a different directory for Program Files for Vista. The program you will install with XP made it "Program Files" and for Vista "Vista Program Files". Remember you can not put a program installed by XP in the same place as Vista cause you will get mixtup. So you will know who bare the program for XP and Vista. Cause when its installed with XP its not sure you will be able to install over and make it work agin with Vista, they don't use the same way of using programs. So vie versa.

OH! remember when using internet, with the Ethernet card don't communicate with your modem, just "RENEW IP" or rest the modem that maybe the only problem.

Given MS's penchant for carrying on un-resolved issues/problems/exploit holes or vulnerabilities from one OS to the next & the next (some going waaaayy back, I wonder if it'll have many of the same bugs.Time will tell, I guess.
