Please help, Outlook Express file folders have disappeared!

If anyone can help me with this, I'd certainly appreciate it. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question or not. Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum section. I am using Windows XP Professional with SP #3.
Anyway, the other day I got a message from Outlook asking permission to compress my e-mail file folders. It's done this before and I've always let it with no problem.
I fired up my computer yesterday and discovered that all my e-mail folders, all received and sent messages have disappeared.
I thought my wife may have accidentally erased the files so I checked the Recycle Bin. There were several .bak files with the same names of the file folders.
I figured hit the restore button and the files would be restored.
WRONG.
No I can't find them at all. I've done searches for all .bak files and nothing comes up.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to find these and restore them that would be great. Thanks in advance.
