What about the regular updates from MS
I ran my XP laptop for 2 years without the net framework installed. I had to replace the HDD when I got the laptop and did not
want to put anything in it till I knew I had it fixed. Yes I did finally install net framework and found it was something I wanted, but it was not a must have.
So what happened? Did you lose the HDD or did you have a crash which damaged the computer's OS to the point the computer would not work?
You said.
The problem is this:
In the download and install window, the "total Download Progress" amount changes erratically. 20 minutes ago it said 5mb out of 63; 10 minutes ago it said 2mb out of 63; now it says 27mb out of 63. How can the numbers bounce around like that?? Does this indicate the download is not working properly?
Not sure what is going on. 63MB download with a 56K modem getting 40kbits per second would take about 26 minutes to do the download, at 5Kbs it would take 3 and a half hours (I hope I got the math correct). What you maybe seeing is the connection speed changing, causing the status of the download to swing up and down.
Next time try
Making sure the phone line cord is undamaged and the jack is clean (unplug and plug in the phone line jack is usually enough to improve function).
Right click on the modem tray icon and then click on details to watch to see if the speed is fluctuating.
