Windows XP forum: How can I change or edit the boot screen?

How can I change or edit the boot screen?

I had to reinstall XP on my dual boot system which includes Ubuntu. Previously only one boot screen appeared with 'Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition as the last item in the list. Selecting this line plus 'Return' booted XP. After the reinstall, the last and only Windows item in this list is 'Windows NT/2000/XP (loader)'. Selecting this line takes me to another boot screen with the following options:

XP
help
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Selecting the last line boots XP.
How can I edit the first boot screen to return it to its previous condition and eliminate the need for the second boot screen?

Editing boot.ini makes no difference

I edited boot.ini by taking out 2 lines which included the 'xp' and 'help' options. But this made no diffeence when I rebooted. The 3 options still appeared on the second boot screen and reappeared in boot.ini. Something was putting back the options I deleted. Any ideas what I could try now? Where are these 3 options coming from? Why does the system think there are 3 options and these options in particular?

Then you are not using a Microsoft boot loader.

I can't help here. Try to find out what boot loader is being used.

BootSkin: Safely and easily change your Windows boot screen.

Go to this link and download BootSkin. It allows you to change your bootscreen and replace it with a screen you can download from Web sites such as WinCustomize.com or one you create yourself. It works on Windows 2000 and XP and replaces no system files.

Many thanks for the suggestion. But I think I do want to change the part of the system which generates 2 of the superfluous items on the bootscreen list ('xp' and 'help'). I would also like to find out why these additional items are being generated and remove the reason for their generation. But as Rob suggested, the problem may be that whatever controls the dual boot, Ubuntu perhaps, is the cause of the problem, not Windows. I'll have a go at changing the boot.ini in Ubuntu, whatever it is called!
