CD/DVD not working with XP desktop.

Please could someone advise me on the following problem; I have a desktop that is approximately 2 years old and has Windows XP installed, but I have just found out that the CD/DVD has stopped working. I have tried renewing the CD/DVD Player and installing AVS DVD playing software, but I still get nothing except a intermitant clicking sound for approximately 20 seconds to start with from the player and a tiny disc next to the curser arrow - then nothing happens. I have tried to source the link to 'D' drive, but all that happens is the message that there is 'no link' or 'link corrupted'. When I try to open the 'D' drive page - it is blank. Someone told me to reinstall Windows, but I can not do that, because the drive will not respond.
I would be grateful for any help.

and the drive is dead, BUT it could just be a problem. Go to "Device Manager" and find the drive under "DVD/CD-Rom drives". Right click on the listed device under that title that matched the DVD drive in question. Pick "Uninstall" from the popup menu, close "Device Manager" and reboot. Windows will detect the drive again and reinstall it. If that does not work, try this:

Thank you lacsr,
I have done as you advised with the Device Manager and everything is now running fine again. The only other problem that I now have is that I have just bought a Led Zep DVD that is on a HD DVD format and it does not play, but anyway I am happy that the main problem has been resolved.
