Problems Booting Windows XP

by renderhaus - 2/23/08 2:41 PM

I've got a 3-year old dual processor (not dual core) BOXX Technologies 3D workstation.

In an effort to over-write an existing copy of WXP SP2 with the original WXP installation disk, I was told that it would not install because a "newer" version of Windows was already installed (Service Pack 2). So, I proceeded to uninstall SP2 and in the process had it go ahead and delete several components it said may be necessary for other programs to run properly - figuring, "What the heck...I'll be doing a complete formatting of my entire hard disks and reinstallation of Windows anyway...SURE, go ahead and delete ALL that stuff." After which it told me it needed to reboot my system in order for the changes to take effect.

Well, that was the last time I was allowed beyond the realm of DOS. Because now, all it does is cycle repeatedly through all the DOS stuff normally done before Windows initiates. But Windows never initiates. Just before it's about to, the system resets as if it had just been booted up again. This is perpetual.

I've tried inserting the Windows installation disk upon startup to boot from, as well as floppy boot disks - both of which would probably work for me IF both my mouse and keyboard were not being totally disabled the very moment I reach the first screen prompting me for keyboard input (i.e. "Press up or down arrow to select start mode", or "Insert Windows bootable disk labeled "B", then press Enter", or "Press Enter to boot from CD") NO DICE. I can't even tell it to go ahead and do any of that, because the keyboard shuts down.

My keyboard powers up and is fully operable all the way through the screen that shows the system configuration (BIOS, I guess this would be called - it's mostly light gray, and it displays things like number and type of drives installed, partitions, etc.) But the moment this screen flashes off and it goes to a screen that requires keyboard input, my keyboard is totally and completely deactivated. Even if I hit "Any Key" to go into setup, as it instructs here, I can go no further because - again - my keyboard is deactivated the moment I leave this screen. I've got the boot disk in the A: drive but can't even tell it to start processing info from the second (and subsequent remaining 5) disks.

Someone PLEASE HELP ME. I am at my wits end. I refuse to take my workstation to a place like Best Buy, who wants me to be another in their long line of suckers paying $200 to reformat a system.
