Installing good XP over bad XP?

Greetings,
I live in extreme southern Mexico, with EXTREME communications issues! I recently had a local (American) build me a computer to continue my hotel operation. Well, he used a "technician" copy..or,whatever, of XP Pro, and I cannot get updates and am continually bombarded with warning messages about the validity of my OS. I purchased a retail copy (although it has HP logo printed on it) through EBay, it finally arrived after 9 weeks (I told you I was remote!)..and I just need to know how to install this new "legitamate" copy without disrupting my previous setting, etc.. Would really appreciate any help.

You might try. . .

After a normal boot, insert the new XP CD. It'll auto-run. When it opens it'll ask if you want to install XP. Do it. It'll install a new copy over the top of the existing copy leaving all your other "stuff". This copy should be valid.

lets try this first

click start then all programs then accessories and finally system tools you should see windows activation click on that does it say windows activated?

Sorry to tell you, but if your copy of XP has an HP logo on it, it is NOT retail and is most likely not going to work on your system. I suppose it's at least worth a try since you've waited so long, but keep in mind that even if you just install over top your existing installation you'll still likely have to reinstall all your applications. You can try Googling the method for just swapping installation keys, but I would be rather surprised if that copy activates.

Just for future reference, ebay is NOT a good place to buy software of any kind unless you have no other choice. To many fraudulent listings, misleading listings, etc.

I would also investigate any legal options you may have against the person who built that computer for you and installed pirated software on there. Ratting him out might well get you a free copy of whatever software they gave you pirated copies of. Also keeps other people from being taken advantage of as you have.

Hi Jimmy,
Sorry I've taken so long to thank you for your input..it is much appreciated. After buying a "home burned" copy of Rosetta Stone, I, too, am leery of eBay software deals. In regards to the XP copy, I did contact the seller (a legitimate electronics firm in Arizona..I at least went on their web-site). The assured me that all would be well, and offered a full refund if, for any reason, I had trouble due to the "non-retail" nature of the software. They have emailed me on their own, to check up on my progress. I tend to trust them, so I'm going to give it a shot. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again for taking your time to help.
