Windows XP forum: Deleting Setup Log Files?

Deleting Setup Log Files?

In Disk Cleanup today, I noticed there are 6,029KB in Setup Log Files, defined as "Files created by Windows". I didn't delete them, as I'm not clear what they are. Last Thursday, I uninstalled one printer; and today, I installed a different printer. Are these files most likely from that? Is it okay to delete them?

They might be helpful if troubleshooting a setup problem but aren't, to my knowledge, necessary to for the OS to function. What I'd do would be move them to the recycle bin. Run the machine normally and empty the recycle bin the next time you do a cleanup. The disk cleanup utility tends to list expendable files quite conservatively. There are many more you can manually remove.

thing happened. I just looked at Disk Cleanup again, and the entire category 'Setup Log Files' is gone ... totally gone. I checked the Recycle Bin to see if they had somehow gotten there, but the 6,029KB weren't there either. Haven't a clue where they went ...

Steve, I appreciate your post even if it seems as if I don't need it ... at least right now. Thanks.

'Setup Log Files' is gone ... totally...

Hi SGreen,

Although Disk Cleanup has several 'Standard' or 'Fixed' files that remain in the list even when empty... not all files are like that.
Some files only show up in the list when there are items in them to be discarded.

In the case of removing printers, and other items (including software and some online downloads), which require setup files... IS the reason 'Setup Log Files' was in the Disk Cleanup list.
