I have had a lot of success with Hauri's ViRobot. There is a free trial available as well. It not only picks up the worms and mailicious scripts, but it repairs or deletes them better than Norton or McAfee. Combine that with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (free for personnal use, and you should not have any problems.

The downloadable version of AVG looks for a file called SETUP to run when it unpacks (unzips). If there is a SETUP in the folder it's unzipping into, or one in your path, it will run that instead of the setup for AVG. Make a new folder and copy the file into that and run it from there.

For a paid software I have been using trend internet security. I think trend's software is less taxing on the system (slows it down less) Than others I have tried.

AVG by Grisoft - the resident shield reports a trojan horse - "Downloader.Qdown.C" is in a system file, and suggests that I immediately run the anti-virus. When I do, it reports no viruses found, but there are specific files that it does not check, this is possibly one of them. Then the resident shield keeps reporting that the trojan horse is still there. I agree with the previous comment that they are slipping (free version) but overall, AVG has found viruses that Norton AV has not.

I use and really like Bullguard's Bulldog www.bullguard.com There is a free 30 days and then it's $39.99 for a year. With daily anti-virus updates and 100mb of backup, this program is difficult to beat. I've tried Norton and McAfee, Bulldog beats the heck out of them.

This is just for information to those of you who recommended AVG. I had been using it for quite some time and got a virus in my PC. It came in an email and I used AVG to scan that email and it found nothing. In addition, AVG scanned approx 30,000 files, but Norton scanned over 90,00 and found the virus. A friend had exactly the same results. So I feel AVG cannot be relied on to do the job.

As previously recommended AVG 6 Free suits me to a "T". Been using several months and never a problem. Set it to auto update and scan daily. Great little program and price is right!

Don't forget...
The guys that do the free software (like AVG wot I use) need support. I used to use Norton but it messed with the registry. I switched to AVG and everything runs faster and more reliably. Paying the small price they ask keeps them going and keeps us up to date. (I also switched to ZoneAlarm Pro and the same goes for them - thanks guys!)

Increase available download sites and choose one that stays less busy. Here's how:

AVG 6 Free Follow procedure below to increase download update sites from 3 to 9 to keep AVG updated & current.

Go to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6

Find the file url.ini. Change the file name to url.old and save. The saved file will appear on the same page. You can change it back if you find things don't work out, but they will. Then in the original file delete all the text and paste in:

Restart your computer and you will find next time you run your AVG control panel to down load you will have three options in the dropdown menu. The last option, www.grisoft.com, is reported to be the fastest.

There is no danger in doing this as you have the old text saved. If you want to return to your old setup, merely delete the new url.ini file and rename the old saved file url.ini
