Windows XP forum: I keep getting a Pop Up saying "Windows Security Alert"

Hi All,

I used all the instructions in this post, but still had a "Windows security alert" pop-up, I finally got rid of it by running the online Windows Onecare...yes it actually found trojan/win32 which wasn't cleaned by any of the above programs, so try that. Since then everything is working just fine.

I'm having problems with the Antivirus 2009, which I understand is a rogue program. I've downloard SmitFraudfix - which seems to be a popular 'cure' for the malware. I'm not a computer techie. But I've managed to install and run the program. But after over 48 hours, it seems to be still scanning. Please advise on how long it's supposed to take to do the clean up.

I kept getting a lot of pop up fake alerts on my computer too. What I did was download security software. I have AT&T Fast Access DSL so I got AT&T Internet Security Suite free. You can also get McAfee, Norton, etc. I also downloaded the free version of Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware 2008.

I usually first run AT&T security suite, followed by Adaware and then SpyBot search and destroy in that order. The important thing is to make sure when you do a scan for spyware that you do it in "Safe Mode." Restart your computer and while it is re-starting, tap the "F8" key. This will put your computer in safe mode. It will give you a list of options to choose from once your computer starts back up so be sure to choose "safe mode without networking." The reason you do this is so while you are running your scan, nothing can connect to the Internet. You'll be surprised at how much spyware you will find. You can delete all the spyware you found while you are in safe mode. When you are finished, re-start your computer. I usually run a scan every week at the least. I hope this helps.

I am having much the same experience. What is the answer? How can I get rid of these pop-ups?

Hi I get the same problem on my Administrator profile. I can't use the Internet on this profile because the browser says page not found. Actually it says something like "Internet Explorer page not found" even when I open the Firefox browser!! If I try to run my Avira AntiVirus it is just blocked and the Security alert pops up. The same is true of most other programs I try to run.

However, on my personalised profile, I have no problems - yet!

I think part of the problem was that my Administrator profile had no password.

Anyway I ran the Avira AntiVirus from my personalised profile but it has not managed to resolve the problem in my Administrator profile.

I am not sure what to do now as I can't download any antivirus software to my Adminstrator profile. How do I go about cleaning out this virus from my Administrator profile?
