Windows XP forum: Outlook Express ( not responding)

Outlook Express ( not responding)

My Outlook Express email freezes as soon as I open it. I cannot click on any options in the email page.
UI defraged, virus scanned , tried to reintall Outlook. Nothing worked yet.

I Have tried every step that I googled.

I use XP home Edition, Internet Explorer 6.0
Before I reformat and reinstall Windows XP maybe someone knows a simple solution. I do not know how to save my settings to put back after the reformat either. Yikes

Any help will be appreciated.

PS. the last time I tried a reformat I google instruction. There were so many different venues I decided not to do it.

What is the CPU percentage for msimn.exein task manager?

Have you scanned in safe mode,try running your AV and AVG ANTI SPYWARE in safe mode.

Does OE still freeze in safe mode?

Have you tried system restore?

Ok found a link there that I will try...in fact there are a few links on that site. Now I just wish i knew how to backup and reinstall folders and settings and info before I do this .

Backing up your Outlook Express.

Hi Maggiem2,

For future backup for OE here is a site that I use with great success.

To stop your initial problem happening again periodically go to:
Outlook Express/tools/options/maintenance tab/clean up now/compac - you will find loads of copied files in your Recycle Bin which you can delete with safety.

I found this suggestion as well but when i searched for the inbox.dbx files three different files show up. Don't know which one is the one I should delete.

"Just to let you know that I have just had an identical problem (msimn.exe using 98 % cpu etc) and deleting the inbox.dbx file sorted the problem out. Definitely worth a try for a quick fix - providing you don't mind losing the inbox contents .... "

I decided to just delete as many dbx files I could for OE .. Not sure which ones I did but it worked.

My email is responding again and the cpu usage has dropped.

Tried many fixes, non worked. How about I delete every item in my register that has outlook express associated with it?

I don't believe deleting registry entries will solve the issue,on the contrary,may cause more issues.
