my standby icon is shadowed, meaning disabled - Win XP Pro

After reinstalling my 3month-old Dell E521 OS Windows XP
Pro having some glitches. Solved most but one baffling
me is the subject icon.
Any solutions?

Could be proper. Why?

Standby relies on system drivers that are not on Microsoft's XP CD. There can be a Dell drivers CD or they may have you download them from dell.com.

In short... Drivers.

As you said, it was a matter of course.
My Dell disk for such problem solving was
still in my computer.
Must be getting senile.

The drivers issue is one that is creating far too many pleas for help.

Microsoft - Expects us to know to search and install drivers.
Us - Most of us just want it to work.
