Windows XP forum: XP home Cd gone missing.

You can use your friend's xp-cd to fix this problem. If you have a Dell, I suggest finding someone that has a Dell also and using their xp-cd. The same goes for Gateway and all the other computer manufacturers.

* If you registered XP with Microsoft you can order a replacement CD for a nominal fee. On the other hand, if the OS was pre-installed you must call the manufacturer instead and order a system recovery set from them.

* You can borrow the CD from someone else and use your product key. If you have a retail copy of XP you need a retail CD, whereas if XP was preinstalled you must borrow a disk from the same make/model.

* Repairing XP likely will do nothing about the fragmentation issue. Instead, I would try using a third-part defragmenter. Diskeeper Lite is a free option, and the software the Windows defragmenter is based on.

That is a requirement for Diskeeper support technicians to offer remote assistance. Copied from the Diskeeper FAQs:

"A Note About Firewalls:
As a normal part of its operation, the Diskeeper Service (DkService.exe) acts as a server on your system. If you are running a hardware or software firewall, you may see messages indicating Diskeeper Service is trying to act as a server. These messages are expected; you can safely allow these events. This functionality is designed to allow for support for network operations (e.g. Remote Control) via Diskeeper Administrator.

You may also be notified that Diskeeper is trying to access the Internet. It is important to note that Diskeeper does not access the Internet (except when you specifically use the Check for Updates feature), but it does use Windows mechanisms that may trigger these alerts from your firewall. Again, these messages are expected and you can safely allow the events. If networkability or automatic update checking is not required, you can safely disable this."

There could not be more different siblings.
I get prompt response from M/S USA, saying I should get in touch with M/S UK. It is impossible to reach M/S UK or urge them to respond to any request to help.

I am very disappointed with UK based entity.

You got to jump through the hoops to no avail.

I have not been able to get any response.

I did notice there was no mention of the UK on the US site. "There will always be an England." -maybe not!

Now MY problem is that I don't have the product ID number, which I need to qualify for free support. (Instead of $59 US!)
