XP home Cd gone missing.

Hi There,
I downloaded IE7 which caused some issues. I removed it, but could not launch IE6. Then I read Bob's excellent piece on the subject and decided to repair the XP installation, absolutely sure that I have the XP disk.
I had removed the the items to get the xp disk in to do the repair, before looking for the cd
.
I can not find my XP home CD to repair my IE6.
However after removing some bits I find that my IE6 is back though it is changed it is not the same as before. It does not say Internet Explorer 6 on top but it works fine.
Two issues:
1. Where can I find a replacement dick? I have the code number, It is working on my computer and I can install Vista if I decide to go that way.
2. I can not properly defragment my hard disk drive. After going through the process I end up with disk with quite large chunks of red mass on the analysis. It covers about one third of the disk. Which brings me back to reparing my XP.
Please help.
My PC is P4,1Gig Ram,Vista Adviser reports that it is ok for vista installation,it has nominal 60Gig disk though it stores about 55Gig at the moment with around 20 GB available.
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Should I go for Vista or can I repair my XP without the disk?
