c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe error

Hi! I am gettin a c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe error every time I boot up. A command window is open and a 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem window with the error opens. After the error it states The NTDVM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:053e IP:0e98 OP:8e 33a7 33 c5 Choose "close" to terminate the application. If I choose ignore the string after "...illegal instruction." just changes. If I press close it closes but there are no icons whatsoever on my desktop. This happens even if I choose Guest as the user (I have to users set up). If I do ctrl alt and del I can see that there are processes in operation, but I cannot start any applications. Please advise

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Instructions here.

If so, find userinit.exe in your System32 folder. If it's not there try looking for userinit.* (the star searches for all instances of userinit. ).

If you have something like userinit.vxe then you have the W32.Beagle.M@mm virus. Run your anti-virus program in Safe Mode and see if that corrects it.

Same problem while logging in Windows Vista

You got any solution for this? I was facing this on a Lenovo Laptop. I called up their customer care. That person told me to Format my harddisk and reload the OS... sad

Please let me know if you have solution for this.

Depending on what stage userinit got to before corrupt data you should still be able to get into your desktop by using ctl-alt-del and opening task manager. In task manager click file -> new task(run)
and type in explorer (the file that loads start menu/desktop/personal settings)
From there you should at least be able to do some troubleshooting and scan for malware.
