Help!!! My CMD field does not recognize commands anymore

Hello everybody....

I was doing some work on my pc... it has XP on it and everything works fine but when I go to my command window it no longer recognizes commands.

Ipconfig
Netstat
route print
Ping
Traceroute
and commands of that nature are not recognized as commands...I evcen downloaded Powershell and cant get basic commands to work. Any Ideas what the hell happened to my box?

What is your PATH?

Type PATH, press enter and make sure it includes a path to those utilities.

Ive never used the path command.. I typed in "Path ipconfig" and it came up blank.

Now go find where netstat.exe and edit your path to match.

Here's how to change the path in XP...

I have found my NETSTAT.exe and IPCONFIG.exe's... I can also see that the paths to them and frankly all of my other commands had been deleted. I can see how to set up new paths via the system properties window... I believe with a little research and practice I am now on the right path to figuring this out. I appreciate everything a ton.

heres what im doing...

my Ipconfig file is in my system 32 folder....

So my path should be "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\IPCONFIG"

Now what I do is go to my system properties box... and for system variable select new... name the path IPCONFIG... then specify the path with the string I typed in above... C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\IPCONFIG

Now i have typed in the variable and the string under my profile and under system but I still can not get it to execute in the CMD window....

Also.. I have just learnbed that if you type Path anything into your command window.. it deletes ALL OF THE PATHS! woah boy....good googgely moogely...

The path only needs the directory to search and would not include a filename.

One new thing I've noticed is that I can open the CMD window... drag and drop my executables from my System32 folder into it...and execute them like that.

Ill try to fix my paths now though... this is good stuff

No dice... Ive typed in the file name... copy and pasted the path with \ on the end after SYSTEM32 and without...

I have added the command under user variables and system variables.... Should I leave only Temp and TMP in the user variable section and add the commands to the system variable section?

Let me see what happens...

PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem

The Wbem-part seems to be related to WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation). Maybe it's necessary because this is a business PC in a business network.

I don't have GTK, Quicktime and Powershell here, so there's no need at all to add those folders to the path. But it seems the installers of GTK, Quicktime and Powershell thought otherwise. If you agree with those, simply add them to the path above so it becomes
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0

I think you can leave out the Wbem one.

Instead of typing cmd.exe in the run box,try command.com
