Windows XP forum: 2GB files download limit

Still seem to be buggy. While you noted the unmetered content that is the big clue. You're using someone's modified system so you will see bugs.

I have tried other browsers which is how I come to the conclusion that the problem lies within windows.

File system is NTFS. (I think FAT 16 is limited to 2GB if that is what you were getting at.)

I have ubuntu (edgy) on vmware and a SUSE live CD that I have yet to decide how to install (I have a laptop, so another hard drive partition is the last thing I need).

I did think about using the virtualised machine to download it. I'll do that if windows can't be de-shagged.

HDD is definitely NTFS.

It isn't my ISP (they have confirmed that there is no reason why I can't download over 2GB and they are the only trustworthy ISP in Australia).

I don't use a download accelerator.

I meant to say that windows was the most likely problem (it usually is).

I am perfectly willing to accept that it may not be the culprit (I originally thought Firefox was the problem, I moved on to explore other browsers and then had my ISP go over my account, connection and their file hosting thingo before coming to the conclusion that it was most likely some aspect of the operating system).

All that being said the question stands as:
"Why is my Dell XPS m1710 running windows XP Media Center Ed 2005 on Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz unable to download more than 2GB from an HTTP download site when 38952 other people have?

I don't have hijackthis (though I may get it based on this thread).

I will eventually use a Linux based OS more fully (when a few more software developers get over their linuphobia.

I may never actually install America's Army. The whole point is really to ask why my system can't download over 2GB via http.

Perhaps a better question would be 'has any one else experienced a 2GB http download limit that can not be explained by any mere mortal or have I just become one of many trapped between the expansive posterior of the microsoft corporation and the cold hard ground?'

I have had .iso files well over 4GB floating around my system in the past (so it isn't a file system thing).

I'm half sure I have successfully downloaded 2GB+ files using FTP before. Thus adding to the probability of it being restricted to HTTP.

Thanks for your replies up to now. I'm not sure that this is something that the cnet community can answer but any other thoughts are welcome.

Let's assume it's your Windows. We can test that is or isn't in short order. Here's how.

1. Find a file over 2GB on your system.

2. Install a Web Server or FTP server on your system. Apache is easy, FTP Servers are out there by the boatload.

3. Set the 2+GB file as a download on your machine.

Now download that from your FTP or Web server.

Brilliant.
