Win Xp won't recognize SATA hard drive

I have an HP Media PC M400Y. It is a P4 3.0 Ghz with 1GB ram. It originally came with MCE2002. Last week I upgraded to MCE2005 to use the media extender feature with my new X-box 360.
Here is the problem and some background.

About a year ago, I had installed a second SATA hard drive, Seagate Baracuda 300GB, model ST3300831AS. This drive was plug and play into the motherboard and never had any issues. Before reformating the main C: drive, I moved all my valuable data on the SATA drive.

I then turned the PC off, removed the power and signal cables from the SATA drive. (I'm a novice, and didn't want to take any chances of erasing the SATA drive, while reformating the main C drive)

After installing MCE2005, I turned the PC off, reconnected the SATA power and signal cables. Now the problem is I can't see the SATA drive in My Computer, or BIOS.

The only reference to it that I see is during boot up screen. It reads something like
"Primary channel found... 286198 MB"
"Secondary channel not found "

Any suggestions on how to get my PC to read this drive would be very much appreciated. Sorry for the long message.

XP doesn't have native SATA support. There are many web sites noting how to install XP properly with that F6 key during install where you offer XP drivers for your SATA chipset.

Try that.

Bob, thats interesting. When I called Seagate tech support, they mentioned that SATA hard disk drivers are built into Xp.

Are there separate drivers for SATA Chipset and SATA hard drive?

The hard disk is supported but not the SATA chipset. Go figure why they would slice the definition that way.

Thanks Bob and others for your help. The drivers for the SATA chipset was the problem. I just pulled out the SATA controller card to get the make and model, searched for it's drivers and installed them. That took care of it.

BIOS settings for SATA may be set to none.

If this is so the look at the MB manual on how to re-set the port to auto.
