Computer won't finish booting

I've recently got a new computer and I've pushed the other one to the other side of the desk, and after trying to boot a few times without a keyboard, and then connecting the keyboard (why would that change anything?) and using it a bit without a keyboard, it suddenly doesn't want to load up! It starts loading and all, even when the keyboard is connected, and it 'freezes' when it gets to a screen that talks about how the volume is clean. Arg. And I don't know how to start it up, or use the setup, or start it in safe mode. (I dont want to lose the data).

Well, its a dell dimension 2300 with a broken nVidia 440 MX installed

ok i've disconnected the keyboard from this new one and am using the onscreen keyboard, im tryingto startvin safe mode but holding shift isnt working, help!
