Windows XP forum: Need help deleting Temp files

read that link very awkward and time consuming,just go to control panel,folder options then view,select show hidden files then accept,go to my computer select c docs and settings then ure name,go to folder local settings then temp,shortcut it to ure desktop and ure away.
reset show hidden folders and bingo done.
remember xp has 2 different temp folders the other tempis in c:windows temp,that prob will have old bits and bobs in.hoped this helped

n my XP Home, I went through the process described in your instructions, found about 110 temp files in the list and placed them all in the Recycle Bin. However, when I rebooted I found that many things were wrong, devices missing, desktop all messed up etc. I had to undelete all the items and do a System Restore. In all I had about an hour of work to put my computer back in order as it was before the deletions. Perhaps you should reexamine your instructions and state more precautions. When I delete the temp files I find that I have to close all programs, disable my anti virus and shut down the internet. Then the files delete easily. Don't forget to enable your anti-virus when you're done.

Hello, this is JoJo again. Sorry for the left out steps to get to the search line. It is as follows;
Click on the Start Button, go up to Search, slide over to Files or Folders and the search window appears. In the Search for files or folders named box you type the script and in the Look in: box, make sure it is set to serarch your C Drive. Or if you have multiple drives you can select Local Drives and then hit Search Now and a list will come up of items found. You will see that most end with tmp even if it is a folder it is ok to delete it. Go to the menu bar, Edit, Select All and they will all be highlighted. You can right click and select Delete. Are you sure you want to send this # of files to the Recycle Bin? Yes Or No. Click Yes. You can also right click on Delete as mentioned above and hold down the Shift Key. This will prompt the question, Are you sure you want to delete this # of files parmanently? Click Yes and it will by pass the Recycle Bin and get deleted. They are not restoreable, they will be lost. Just keep in mind the spaces throughout the command line. Good Luck, JoJo

done it all from a command prompt with just a couple of quick steps.

1. Open a command prompt (Start | Run | type cmd then click OK or press the Enter key

2. Type the following commands (what is in bold):
cd \ then press Enter (takes you to the root directory)
del /s *.chk;*.rip;*.tmp;~*.* then press enter (the /s causes deletion of the files named in both the current directory and all sub directories and the ; (semi-colon) is a conditional symbol that allows multiple commands to be run)

Files that are in use are skipped while files that are not in use are located and deleted quietly and quickly.

PS. On a thread that is over 3 years old it is unlikely the person who made the suggestion will be around to respond.

Did you notice that the del /s has a space between the l and the / ?

There is also a space between the s and chk
If your post is correct, then you forgot that, "s*.chk

The line should be;

del /s *.chk;*.rip;*.tmp;~*.*

I have tried deleting temp files as instructed here: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm 512 temp files were found and deleted without having to unchecked "Hide protected operating system files". But once I unchecked "Hide protected operating system files" another 457 temp files were found. I'm afraid to delete those temp files. Any advise?

in my experience programs who do that are the best way, not all of them though but here is one you might find useful.

i know it saids registry cleaner but it does clean temp to, worked for me

Yes, in general it is secure to delete temporary files that you're able to. Unfortunately those files can be recovered using different software programs. I'd advice you to use professional software to get rid of those files, like History Killer of the PRO version of that program.
