One of the nice effects of using EFS is that even an Administrator can't get to the files. And as far as I know, even Microsoft.
If you used EFS, put the drive back, get the credentials on floppy to bring over.
Better yet, put the needed files on CDR.

Is in Start, Help And Support.
Just type in EFS and read up.
If you used it, then you need to put the drive back to get at the certificates and files.

No, Havn't used file encryption. There was a password on my user ID. Perhaps that's the problem. The PC will not boot from the old HDD now for some reason.

While I did read you may have used EFS, now you write you didn't. As such, now you may need to just log in as administrator and take ownership of the files.

Be sure to save what you can't lose on recordable CD or DVD. I have no less than 3 sets of CDRW and more of my digital picture collection. Another backup of a few key documents is on an USB memory key which I take with me almost everywhere...
It includes my XP and other software activation codes...
