how long was it before you installed a firewall on each, an anti-virus on each, and some anti-spyware on each machine?

Did you do this before connecting to the internet on each?

It is said that an unprotected computer when first connected to the internet will be hacked or infected within minutes of first connecting.

What protection are you using now?

It is often a quick cause of browser and general performance slowdown.

Windows Defender can slow you down. I was having heavy slow down on browsing using IE or firefox. I can see my PF usage going up and the firefox.exe or Iexplore.exe memory usage is steadily going up. After some time, my PC slows down and almost at a standstill.

I tried all of the following.

1. Removed all spyware usiong at least 2 spyware programs.

2. No Visual specialities.

3. Removed Norton

Nothing worked.

But When ti tred the following I saw some improvement for some time.

1. Removed Windows defender
2. Stopped several of the services
3. Several startup programs
4. increased cache size (good one)
5. Started cleaning up the cache frequently.
6. Removed the keep checking the page for newer version option
7. Defragmented the drive.

Still my PC is slower than everything else I have.

I am going to add more memory to it., which might help.

XP is disappointing. I wonder why they stamped windows vista capable sticker on my PC. It would have been a disaster if I would have gone for it.

I am thinking of formatting the drive.
