NO HARD DRIVE :-(

Have been having a few problems with my computer, not a problem I though I'll just fix it with my XP disk, wouldn't let me as it said I had a few files missing. Again not a major problem I'll reformat and reintall (done it that many times with my old computer I can do it with my eyes shut). NOW I have a major problem as it went through the motions of checking my system and then told me it couldn't find a hard drive so couldn't continue and rebooted. I had the computer made at a local computer shop and accoring to the device manager I've got a ST320082 2AS SCSI Disk Device. So can anyone tell me why XP says it's not there and how do I make it "see" it?

Did you load the driver?

As its a SCSI drive, make sure you have loaded the driver for your SCSI card. To check, open your machine and look for the card that the hard drive is plugged into. Also, if your old version is still working, you can look for SCSI controller cards or something in the device mangler.

XP and SATA hard drives

...so, that model number is SATA, not SCSI.

XP installation CD's don't have an SATA driver. You must provide this to the XP setup program by pressing F6 when prompted during the early blue screens of the XP setup program.

Where do you get the driver? Since this is a locally built computer, the first place to look is on the motherboard model page of motherboard maker's website.

What is your motherboard make & model?

Hello Linkit,
You were right about it being a Seagate, I went to their website and ran their Diagnostic program and it said there was nothing wrong with it. And I have no idea what my Motherboard is let alone the model number. Even though I've been using a computer for the last 10 years I have no knowledge of the insides of a computer, it's about the one thing in my house I haven't dismantled to see how it works.

In disk management it says
C: Partition Basic NTFS Healthy(System)
In Device Driver properties it says
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 1/07/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher

If so, what was the solution?

If not, please clarify the problem. Is the aforementioned Seagate HD not showing in My Computer? Do you have more than one hard drive in the computer? Is that Seagate HD your "C" drive?

From all accounts you it looks like you may have a SATA configured hard drive and if so go and enter into your BIOS [On start up [may be] pressing the <Del> key.
Then go into INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS Bios section and change setup to SATA
[Do Have a read of your Hard Drive Hand Book??? as it may show you how to do the above]
