Windows XP forum: Avoiding password at startup

A handy little freeware utility from Microsoft that can do what you want, among other things.

Thank you for the link to Configure Windows XP to automatically login. I had tried unsuccessfully to do this before, even took my desktop to the local "computer expert" in town and he couldn't figure it out. I tried this on both of my computers and it worked like a charm!

I have XP, Int. Explorer 6.0 and this works for me:
Start with Tools / Internet Options. Open Content and click on Auto Complete. Check all blocks, Web Addresses, Forms, User Names & Passwords on Forms and Prompt me to Save Passwords. Give this a try. Good luck.

worked perfectly- where did you find this trick?

Recently, my brother-in-law came to me with a problem. Apparently his system locked him out. As xp boots up and comes to the logon screen, he enters his password and the system prompts him "incorrect password". He only has one user name on his system, and has had it that way as long as I can remember.

Is it possible to, and I am assuming it is, to take his harddrive out, place it into my machine, have my machine boot normally, and use this method to wipe out his user info? Or possibly another direction?

He is really concerned because he has quite a bit of important data on it, and has not backed it up. Hmmmm, funny thing from an IT Professional working at a bank! He actually took the system to his "network" guru's and they told him - wipe the drive and start over. Not the answer he wanted to hear.

So, I told him (I am an old school computer expert) bring the system over and let me have a crack at it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

spend the rest of the week deleting registry entries
and if you dont know what you are doing i dont recommend you play in the registry untill you remove all reg entrys pointing to the password it will be there till you reinstall a fresh copy of the OS and second if you didnt put the password there then some one did if it is not your pc or you are BREAKING in some one elses PC then you will get no more help from me BUT PASSWORDS dont get put on pcs buy there self

if you stop for a second to think about what you are telling me you would see that these changes dont happen automatically buy there self some one has to change them and i bet that some one didnt ask you for permission to access your computer

Autologon will ask you for username and password and will then login for you automatically. If your screensaver is set to ask for a password, it will still do so. Only on reboot the password will no longer be asked for. (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autologon.html)

Go into safe mode under administrator, go into control panel, user accounts and remove the password there.

This is what finally worked for me, when I went to control userpasswords2 the first time it was already unchecked. I had to set a password for the account I wanted to open auto, then I had to go to control userpasswords2 and "check the box", reboot, go back and "uncheck" , when you click apply another box opens and there you have to put in the account you wnat to use and enter password. Hit apply and reboot.

Your idea worked! I was frustrated with the autologon nag and now its resolved. Thanks for the info, I was missing a password string in registry.
