Random Windows XP Professional Crash

by JasonUMD - 4/21/04 7:10 PM

I am experiencing a random Windows XP Professional crash on my wife's computer. The specifications for the computer are as follows:

Asus P4T-CM motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 1.4 GHz (socket 423)
Nvidia GeForce 2 Ti 4200
512 MB RDRAM

Last Friday (4/16) I installed "Beta" drivers (Kensington MouseWorks 6.1) for the following Kensington PilotMouse Optical mouse:
http://www.kensington.com/html/4005.html

A day later, the computer started randomly rebooting. The system error log gives the following error message:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: System Error

Event ID: 1003

When the computer randomly reboots, it hangs during the boot process on the "BIOS" screen. I then have to push the power button on and off for it to successfully boot. Even then, sometimes after I log into Windows, it reboots again. Other times, the computer can be used for a while.

I managed to boot successfully and I uninstalled the mouse drivers and returned the POS mouse. The problem didn't occur for few days so I thought it was fixed. However, it happened again today (4/21). Does anyone have any ideas? I defragged the hard drive as well as ran scan disk. There are also no viruses and I have all the latest Windows updates.

Thanks in advance,
Jason
