Router vs Hub

I only need to link 2 computers together to be able to share my broudband link over a cable modem to the net. One system (A) uses MS2K Pro, the other system (B) MS EP Home Ed. I'm thinking I need to use a router, what do the experts say? Thank you.

Don't use a hub!

A hub is just like an electric wall plug adapter that allows you to have three outlets from one source. So incoming network information is distributed to everyone using the hub.

A router, on the other hand, has intelligence and supplies the data only to the user who requested it. Further, you can use the security features such as encryption, hidden SSID, access restricted to authorized MAC addresses, etc. Leo Laporte calls a router the perfect firewire and he doesn't even use a software firewall on his computers!

And the cream on the cake is that your router can be wireless; eliminating the need for messy wiring!

If your only networking.................

2 computers, don't discount a wired router - more secure & lower cost.
If you go wireless & don't set it up right, you'll be sharing your connection with the neighborhood!
Wireless really only becomes necessary with laptops or where running a wire would be impossible
I have a wired network with a 50 ft span between Router & Switch & am running 6 computers on it at present.
If you go wireless, you have to buy wireless PCI cards for all otherPC's on the network
One thing in favor of wireless is that most wireless routers, althogh more expensive, have wired ports as well
But to get in at rock bottom, all you need is a $20 (after rebate!) wired Router & a few cables>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Enjoy!!!
