do i need all these processes running (system) in task manager

hi, when i check the windows task manager to see how much memory is being used etc, there always seems to be alot of systems processes running and eating away @ my memory (256 mb ram)

do i need all of these running and if so what do they all do?

Review http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and see if there are any services that do not need to be run.
Bring up the Task List by right-clicking on the Task Bar and choosing "Task Manager", make a list of the items that you see there, then go to http://www.answersthatwork.com/ click Libraries of Answers That Work, then click The TASK LIST on the right, this will list all the tasks that are running in the background, some you should leave alone, some you should disable
