ip address expiration date?

I have a cable modem and its renewing the ip address every 2-10 minutes and most of the time I have to repair. This is a major problem for large downloads being lost and online gaming. I dont have a router and I connect threw a ethernet. I run XP Home SP2 , any help into this problem would be appretiated.

You need to call the internet provider.

That lease time is controlled by them, not XP. It's also possible you installed something bad like limeware or another pest.

Hint? Be pest free.

hmm solved but not by me

Ok I tried the ipconfig and ran every posible comand and it kept going out, and then next day it fixed itself.But I thankyou all for help and whatever the problem was, is a mystery.

So ip address expiration date is controled by them. But is there some setting I should look at as to why I lose connection every 2-10 minutes? Also this ISP has been very good for years but now my computer won't stay connected for anything! I have obtain IP / DNs automaticlly and I checked my running task and startup programs, but my knowledge is limited. And as far as calling them they will see if I can get connected and thats all. Then they tell me its not a modem or ISP problem but computer problem so nothing they can do, except charge for a service call. TY for help

How do you know the ip is expiring?

Compared to some other bug? You could use the DOS utility ipconfig to see how long the lease is and possibly do a repair beforehand though I wonder if it is some other issue popping up that is the culprit like an anonymizer or something else that is trying to be fancy.

Who's Modem is it?

Your's or the ISP's - I would try another modem after checking all connection info in Internet properties/connections (usually just check "automatically detect setings"
