Display settings won't hold.

Having trouble keeping the display scheme set to one I call My Favorite but after awhile it reverts to something like Classic Windows except that the Desktop BG color changes to a dark blue or black. When this happens Display creates a Display scheme name called My Favorite (Modified). Although I delete the My Favorite (Modified) scheme and set it back to My Favorite it eventually changes back on its own. Even while it is set to My Favorite (Modified) sometimes the ''Please Waite'' notice appears as though it's going to change again but it stays set to the My Favorite (Modified). Even small changes (eg Scroll bar size) to the My Favorite (Modified) will not hold. This problem seems to occur with absolutely no rhyme or reason. This has been going on for a week or so.

A few weeks ago I was experiencing a Display problem where the screen resolution and IE window size would change erratically. The resolution was not changing to any of the available settings sizes. This was eventually fixed by a System Restoration.

Have had no luck finding info regarding these particular problems searching the Net. At least not that I could understand. I would try reseating the video card but on this machine I have no idea where it is or what it even looks like.

I'm on an eMachines T3624 with XP Home (OEM) nolonger under warranty and Gateway EV700 CRT. All Critical Updates are installed. Currently updated AVG Free and ewido indicate no problems. Inside Tower is clean. The CPU seems to be very cool, both fans running normally and I have the cover partially off just in case. Applications and all other settings seem to be holding up just fine.

I'm hoping some one out there can help me deal with this Poltergeist or what ever it is.
