Windows XP forum: Windows - "Virtual memory minimum too low " Error message

If you run very memory intensive apps or video games you may find you require a much larger paging file. Two GB (2048 MB) is not unheard of. XP will permit a page file size up to 4BG (4096 MB). Setting both Minimum and maximum to the same size will prevent the pagingfile from having to constantly change it's size.

If you change the pagefile size first set it to disable then restart the computer. When the computer returns to Windows immidiately set the new pagefile size (if computer freezes restart to Safe Mode and set the new size). Then restart the computer again for the change to take effect.

Try opening and using for awhile all apps that you expect to be utilizing at once including startups, publising, editing, coding, and video games, etc. After awhile check Commit charge in the Task manager.

How big should the page file be?
There is a great deal of myth surrounding this question. Two big fallacies are:

The file should be a fixed size so that it does not get fragmented, with minimum and maximum set the same
The file should be 2.5 times the size of RAM (or some other multiple)

Having too little RAM will greatly affect system performance, but it will still be addressed. (Like XP x32 versions, it prefers 256MB+ of RAM, but can deal with less.) The difference is that while the x32 versions can only address 4GB of physical memory and 4GB of virtual memory, x64 can address up to 128GB of physical and 16TB (yes, that's terabytes) of virtual memory.
