headphones and speakers play at same time out loud, why?

Hello,
I have the MacBook Pro and i use windows xp mostly. Anyway, I have all my basic software installed.. playing my winamp now... i plugged in my headphones but the music comes out of both the laptop speakers and my headphones. why is this? I thought once you plug the headphones in, the computer goes quiet.
Any ideas I can try?? any help is appreciated!!

Head phones and speakers play togrther...

Where are you plugging in the headphones ?

One reason is that the head phones plug is not plugged all the way in, so that the speakers connection is not cut off.

Speaker Settings Advanced and there is listed Stereo Headphones (note it does not say both Headphones and Speakers) Darrell Lewis

You may have already found information regarding this problem but if not, here's what it says in the Boot Camp FAQ:

"While booted into Windows XP, I still hear sound coming from the built-in speaker even with headphones plugged in.

The Boot Camp Beta audio driver for Windows XP does not currently support rerouting sound."

So, at least you can take comfort from the fact that it's not just your macbook... we're all in the same boat.
