Cannot open more than one file at a time in Windows XP

I'm having a strange problem in WIndows Explorer in XP Pro:
When I select multiple files in a directory (using the CTRL or SHIFT keys) and then right click to get the context menu, and then choose OPEN, nothing happens. This is the same no matter what type of files I am trying to open.
I was used to being able to do this in Win95, Win98, Win2K...whether with files of the same type or even of different types, I could always open several files at once (particularly useful for photo files)
If I just have one file selected, the OPEN command works fine.
Is this an 'improvement' of Win XP, or (more likely) do I have a problem in the registry somewhere?
Thanks in advance for any light you may be able to shed.
