Windows XP forum: Ccleaner

I'm not really concerned with the Cleaner for Windows, what about the index dat files? And in applications, how about the utilities? If I use the Issues and create a back up, how do I find and restore that back up should I need to?

The items listed on the Applications tab are referring to simple things such as MRUs (most recently used), logs, etc, which are safe to delete. However, if you wish to save the data files for a particular program you can uncheck the box. If you're really worried about it, just uncheck everything on that tab as those files don't account for much at all...most of the bulk to be cleaned out is found in temp files and such under the Windows tab.

The index.dat files it finds are also fine to remove. Those files simply list other objects, such as cookies in the case of Internet Explorer, and don't need to remain.

Finally, the link Carol provided should explain how to go about restoring a backup of the registry should it be needed. In my experience, though, CCleaner is very reliable, and I've never needed to restore the registry after using it.

Of course,there never any guarantees with anything.

I never had a problem with deleting what CCLEANER found.You could uncheck any box you do not want to scan.

Since you have XP,you can set a restore point prior to using CCLEANER,and as you know,you can backup.

I've only been using XP for a few months. I've never done a system restore. When I got XP installed the techie told me that if I needed to do one, to call him and he'd walk me through it. Unfortunately, he went out of business. I've read up on it though, it looks pretty straight forward to me. I have been through only the first 2 steps to where I choose a date, of course I don't know what happens after that because I haven't needed to go there. Is there anything I should know beyond that point? Thanks again.

Thanks for this. It goes into a lot more detail than what is in XP Help. Lots of answers to questions here that I've never read about before.
