Windows XP forum: Internal ATA hard drive???

i have a desktop, 128mb ram, xp.... dunno what else to say

Specific make & model of computer?
Total size of current hard drive?
How full is your current hard drive?

It was a rather strange comment for your friend to make for no reason. Did you give friend a reason? Did you tell your friend that you are experiencing problems with your computer for which a new hard drive would be the solution?

Without knowing more specifics of your current computer, it is difficult to tell if spending any money on it is worth it. I will state that you should get at least 512MB RAM (preferably 1GB) for Windows XP. The memory upgrade is likely to help you more than an new hard drive. Still, the make & model number of your computer would help us.

Maybe you can you ask your friend why he/she gave you that recommendation.

BTW, $69.96 for an 80GB HD is very expensive.

The make/model should be on the front of the computer. If not, just use the free program Everest, which can tell you exactly what type of RAM, among a host of other things, you have.

To moo182: what is needed is really a list of the info about your computer, to see what I mean, take a look at my profile and you'll see what I mean.

As for the type of RAM you need, did you get a manual with your machine? If so it will tell you in there what type of RAM you need, how much your mobo will accept and you will know how much is in there.

Whilst you can find out by goiong to Control Panel/System and then the Hardware page and Device Manager, it will NOT tell you how many sticks of RAM are in there.

Download BELARC, it's a free programme and will tell you what you have, including how many sticks of RAM you have and where. You can get it from http://www.belarc.com.

While it would help to know what company made the computer and the model number, you still can get a lot of information form the motherboard model number.

According to Intel's specifications and Crucial.com, that motherboard has two memory slots, each capable of supporting up to a 1GB module of PC2100 (DDR 266) RAM. So the max total memory is 2GB (1GB in each slot).

Crucial.com also indicates that you can use PC2700 or PC3200 RAM. It will just run at the slower PC2100 speed.

I would add at least one 512MB module to improve overall system performance (1GB would be a little better) and the SIMS.

NewEgg.com has 512MB modules for about USD$40.
