It's a hard drive, which is where you would store data. You didn't mention anything about your current hard drive, so I'll take a few shots in the dark...are you low on free space? Do you have large music or video collections you want to store on your hard drive? Is your hard drive acting up, making noises perhaps? Are you receiving errors about impending hard drive failure?
Basically, there are a lot of reasons you'd want to replace a hard drive or add another one, including replacing a failing drive, adding additional space, or giving you a faster hard drive. However, we aren't psychics, so we can only speculate as to why your friend would want you to buy the hard drive. (Perhaps (s)he's even hinting at a birthday gift???) Thus, my suggestion would be to simply ask why the subject of that hard drive keeps coming up.
