My USB flash drives do not read!

I have Windows XP Professional with all the latest upgrades. My problem is that when I put my USB Flash drives into the USB drives, my computer does not read them. I can go to Control Panel and then to Portable Media Devices and I can see the flash drives, but when I go to "My Computer" I cannot see the drive. I have several computers and sometimes I need to move date around but I cannot do so at this time. Any suggestions?

of my flash drives and did this.
right click my computer
select manage
select disk management
if the drive is listed right click and select(if I remember right) Initiate, and then you may have to format it also.

Already formatted, it may be that it is the wrong format type. XP will use NTFS or FAT32 on it's fixed drives, i.e. the hard drives. However, for any removeable media (exterior hard drives, floppies and flash drives) it formats with FAT32 ONLY.

Other than that, the USB drivers may not be loaded, reboot and check the BIOS to see that USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 are enabled, if they're not, enable them, as otherwise your machine will not detect the hardware connected to the USB ports.

It may also be a good idea to try re-installing the USB 2.0 drivers, get your mobo CD, it will have them on it.

I appreciate all the help, but problem that I am having is that my laptop which has XP Professional can read my flash drives well, but my desktop (XP Profesional also) cannot! I can see them when I go to Control Panel: Portable Media Devices but when I plug them into a USB port, I cannot see them in "My Computer". I used to be able to do so but I cannot now!!!

The machine see ANY usb connected hardware at all, if not, as I said it may well be the drivers need re-loading, or better still, check on the chipset manufactuers site for the latest chipset driver, then add in the USB 1.1 and USN 2.0 drivers, that may solve the problem.

It also sounds like you have problems with parasites, try running Ewido in safe mode on full scan first, delete anything it finds. You can download Ewido from www.ewido.net/en.

What do you see here?? Is the USB drive listed? If yes, try changing the drive letter (<right-click> device). Sometimes a USB drive assignment conflicts with another device/drive mapping. If you don't see it, then go after new drivers and updates, then a scan with ewido.

Hey guys, I tried runing the ewido and it found over 30 infections and removed them! Now I can read my flash drives! Thanks for all your help.

I am having same exact issue

The one thing I have noticed is that both of our XP Pro PC's that will not read USB Flash Drives had USB Iomega Zip drivers installed. Uninstalling them did not fix the issue. I suspect Iomega corrupted the USB drivers. Did you install a Zip Drive?

I downloaded and ran Ewido and it found 30 problems in my computer, that is after I have a nationaly known Internet Sucurity protecting my computer! After it repaired those 30 problems, now I can read my flash drives just fine. Try www.ewido.net/en.
