Windows XP forum: screen saver won't come on

screen saver won't come on

I've already checked to see if it's set right and it says it's supposed to come on in 10 minutes but it doesn't. This is a fairly new computer, Dell XPS 400 and I've never had this problem before. I've restarted it a couple times, that still doesn't help and I've gone into settings several times to make sure screen saver is on but doesn't help. The only thing I've recently done is install a MicroSoft wireless keyboard and mouse. I've got the same keyboard and mouse on my other Dell and I don't have the same problem. Help!

wireless mice, (mouses?), causing this problem before.

Does it happen with a normal mouse and keyboard?

Firewalls, some antivirus and "other" programs. Even if you didn't change a thing a software update could have altered the behaviour.

-> Quick recap. Most screensavers only kick in when the machine is not busy. Firewalls are classic items that are often busy for those with always on internet connections.

Microsoft has addressed a similar problem involving the use of its wireless mouse. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=911895 for more information and a possible solution.

Just to make sure someone knows about my battle with the screensaver not starting when I hooked up a Logitech M515 optical mouse on an Inspirion 8500 (2002 vintage) running Windows 2000Pro w/service pack 4. Tried numerous fixes found online. None worked until I found the Logitech forum. SetPoint 3.1.116, found on the logitech site, corrected the "Optical Mouse Not Allowing The Screensaver To Start" problem immediately.

The mouse tilt wheel function also works fine with this old driver.

This driver is generic enough to work with just about any mouse. The driver is listed for Windows 2000 and XP.

Hope this helps soemone who has spent as much time as I have trying to keep the mouse and have the screensaver work.


Now, a question for Logitech. Why does this driver work fine, but 6.X driver does nothing for the problem. Maybe someone should look at this driver and find out what was screwed up in the new drivers.
