Backup Strategy

Im currently backing up my XP (SP2) system to a second internal hard drive. Id like to be able to ''unmount'' the drive or somehow isolate the backup files from the system by a security setting until such time as I need the drive for a backup or restore.
Any ideas, anyone?
My old backup strategy involved using Norton Ghost and saving to an external hard drive. I liked the idea of using an external drive because: (1) for portability, and (2) being able to power-off the drive when not in use would help to extend its life, I presumed, and also protect the backups from any malicious software that may have escaped detection by my security tools.
However, the external drive (a Maxtor One Touch II) started acting stupid; I think its a driver issue that conflicts with a recent OS patch, but I cannot be certain. I began getting Delayed Write Failed error messages. Maxtor hasnt been sufficiently helpful. Although Ive seen a ZILLION people reporting this problem in forums with other drives as well, I have yet to find an authoritative/working solution ... just a whole lot of guesses. And this is why I began writing my backups to a second internal hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
