xp pro HDD spinning a lot

As the subject says, my hard drive, which has XP Pro on it, spins a lot. I know that sometimes I've got virus scans and whatnot running in the background ... but as a test the other day I logged out completely, left myself on the login screen, and STILL my hard drive was spinning.

I'd like to know what my computer is doing, apparently without my knowledge. Is it out finding computer porn somewhere? Is it out looking for new parts? Where can I find out?

thanks, but I'm not sure that's it, unless it stops and starts by itself. I say that because it was already stopped when I went to check it and modify its performance.

Any other ideas?

what is causing the drive to search.

right click the drive the OS is on, usually (C)

Properties

down at the bottom remove the checkmark. I disabled my three XP machines long ago with no ill effects.

Use Task manager/processes to see what's running, and then Google the information. I have found a couple of things on my PCs that weren't bad as such but weren't needed. Also, the more anti-spywatre, adware, virus protection you add, the more little things need to run from time to time.
