XP Home Service Pack 1problems

I am running a Windows XP Home system that had service pack 1 installed and has been activated for many months, but after installing Norton Ghost I could no longer access the Windows Update site. After going through the trouble shooting wizard I was able to get back on the site(it had me change a registry key). My system no longer sees that i had service pack 1 installed and tries to install it. After being asked if you want to archive the files SP1 automatically cancels (it says there was an error) and closes. How can I get sp1 to install?

What version of Norton Ghost are you using?
Ghost's compatibility with Windows XP depends on the Ghost version. Only Norton Ghost 2002, Norton Ghost 2003, and Symantec Ghost 7.5 are compatible with Windows XP. Symantec does not provide technical support for other Ghost versions with Windows XP. - http://tinyurl.com/t3uz

With regards to the error and missing SP1, try to use System Restore to restore the system to the state before Ghost installation. Doing this will let you find out if SP1 will appear again or detected as installed by Windows Update.

you have 2 options as I see it, one to do a system restore, or format your HDD.
To do a restore go to start programs system tools restore, choose a date before the known changes.
Never ever change the regestry keys in XP unless you know what your doing. Regards Quaint Data
